HELLO EVERYONE!

Our next meeting will be 11-6-08 at the Lawton Board of Realtors building, 1609 Euclid at 7:00 Pm. There is a lot on the agenda.

(1)   The Presentation of an award to Mr. Wallace Coffey for the Comanche Tribe’s contribution to out trails program. This will be presented by Councilman Bill Shoemate.

(2)   The Lake and Lands Commission has agreed to be present and address the possibility of a Portal from the Refuge into the land that the City of Lawton owns west of Lake Lawtonka. Jeff Rupert will also be present to discuss this. The trail is already there and being used. This would allow us to put up signs marking the trail and have easier access.

(3)   Tom Cook with the City’s Planning Department will be present to discuss the possibility of establishing a “Rails to Trails” path on the abandoned RR line east of down town Lawton, that runs through Ft. Sill.

(4)   Janette New with an update on the Safe Routes to School Program.

(5)   First planning session for our Tour of the Wichitas in May of 2009 and the Synergy in Motion event at the Museum.

We will bring you up to date on the progress of the many other projects that are under way in the Lawton-Ft Sill and Wildlife Refuge areas.

See you there!

HELLO EVERYONE!

Our meeting on September 4th should be a good one. Remember it is at 7:00 PM at 1609 NW Euclid. We have promises from everyone that I know who is connected in any way, shape or form with Trails in Lawton, Ft Sill, the Wildlife refuge, etc. A lot is happening on all fronts. Tom Cook, who is the City Planning Department’s new guy in charge of the Bike and Jogging Trails, will explain where the first segment of our Lawton Trails will begin and end, and what sort of grant that he will be requesting. In response to the reduction in School Bussing by LPS the Safe Routes to School program is being expanded and Jannette New and Brenda Hatch will be with us to discuss this. Also, Rick Johnson from the State DOT department will give us a perspective from their department as well as explaining how the grant process works.

We will also have Jeff Rupert from the Wildlife Refuge to talk about progress on the trail in the Refuge and also comment on the trail in from Cache.

Brenda Spencer Ragland with Family Morale, Welfare and Recreation at Ft Sill will talk about the possibility of Lawton Trails connecting with a Ft Sill Trail system. I think that this is the “Tipping Point” in our Southwest Oklahoma area. Projects are in all different states and many will tie together in the long run giving us a wonderful place to live and a chance to enjoy a healthy lifestyle for ourselves and our families.See you the 4th,Lon Parks, SecretaryFriends of Trail

HI  EVERYONE!
Our meeting April 10″‘ is by far the most important meeting we have had so far. Andy Howard from Kimley-Horn will be the featured speaker and will present the final version of the bike and jogging trails in Lawton. He will answer any and all questions about the trail and will be presenting this to the City Council for their approval and acceptance. This is an exciting first step that will result in the actual construction of the Lawton Trail system. We hope that this system will eventually extend through Ft Sill and the Wild Life refuge, making it unique in our state,
This will also be our last meeting before our Tour of the Wichitas and Biking event at the Museum on May 3rd. We need your participation in the final planning of this program. We hope that this will grow into an annual event that will be a real happening for both the hike riders of this area and our children and grandchildren,
We would like to take this opportunity to ask for your contribution to the Tour of the Wichitas. Any amount would be welt used and appreciated. Also please be sure and tell everyone about this ride. If you need extra flyers we have them.
See you Thursday, April 10″‘ at 7:00 PM.-This will be at the Lawton Board of Realtors building at 1609 NW Euclid.

Our next scheduled meeting has been changed to April 10, 2008, instead of the 3rd. Further details TBA.

Also we had contact with Andy Howard, where he states:

The Lawton Metropolitan Area Bicycle and Pedestrian Plan is nearing completion. The efforts of Lawton citizens (including member of the Friends of the Trail), city staff and consultants has resulted in a plan that recommends the construction of 77 miles of on-street bike facilities and 24 miles of multi-use trails. The combined 101 miles of facilities will allow for cross-town travel in Lawton and provide access to Ft. Sill and the Wildlife Refuge. This plan and a strategy for implementation will be available for your review and comments at the next meeting of the Friends of the Trail.

Yukon BMX Parents and Riders Association—Track and Trail Enhancements

Yukon BMX Parents and Riders AssociationTrack and Trail Enhancements
A $5,000 grant will support the Yukon BMX Parents and Riders Association, in Yukon, Oklahoma, a suburb of Oklahoma City, as they work to resurface their track and build a mountain bike trail surrounding the BMX facility. These two improvements will help Yukon BMX support a growing number of young riders during peak times, and the singletrack trail will give kids who are interested in bicycling, but not necessarily in BMX, the chance to ride with their friends in a safe, off-road setting. This timely grant comes on the heels of Oklahoma City Mayor Mick Cornett’s challenge to his constituents to collectively lose one million pounds through healthy eating and active living. HELLO EVERYONE!

Our next meeting will be Thursday, February 7th at the Lawton Board of Realtors Building at 1609 NW Euclid. I spoke to Andy Howard from Kimley-Horn who is working on the Bicycle-Pedestrian Paths for Lawton. He will be in town again in February and hopes to have the plan complete enough to submit in March or April. We will be looking forward to this.

There has been a lot of publicity about the Safe Routes to School expansion. I will try to have someone from this program to talk to us Thursday.

Also our Tour of the Wichitas is Progressing. Steve Powell and Bob Morford have finalized the route and we have submitted it to Ft Sill, The Wildlife Refuge and our local Police Department. We will have a map for you to review at the meeting. We hope to begin mailing out flyers for the ride in the next week to 10 days. There is a lot of work to do on the ride and the event at the Museum. Please come Thursday. We need your help!!

Sincerely:

Lon Parks, Secretary

HELLO EVERYONE!

Our first meeting of 2008 will be Thursday, January 3rd at The Lawton Board of Realtors building at 1609 Euclid. There is plenty of work to do. The Tour of the Wichitas will be held May 3rd and that will be here before you know it. I’m pretty sure there will be another “12 Miles of Hell around the 1st of March and some of us will want to work in that race. We have had several favorable conversations with Ft Sill. Also we have made presentations to two of the Ambucs Clubs. Steve Powell at Audio Tech has been really helpful with these programs. Our first meeting of 2008 will be Thursday, January 3rd at The Lawton Board of Realtors building at 1609 Euclid. People everywhere are trying to make their neighborhoods more user friendly and become less dependant upon automobiles. In this respect we are just going with the flow!

See you the 3rd at 7:00 PM..Bring a friend.

Thanks,

Lon
