Friends of The Trail

Our next scheduled meeting has been changed to April 10, 2008, instead of the 3rd. Further details TBA.

Also we had contact with Andy Howard, where he states:

The Lawton Metropolitan Area Bicycle and Pedestrian Plan is nearing completion. The efforts of Lawton citizens (including member of the Friends of the Trail), city staff and consultants has resulted in a plan that recommends the construction of 77 miles of on-street bike facilities and 24 miles of multi-use trails. The combined 101 miles of facilities will allow for cross-town travel in Lawton and provide access to Ft. Sill and the Wildlife Refuge. This plan and a strategy for implementation will be available for your review and comments at the next meeting of the Friends of the Trail.

The Tour of the Wichitas

A beautiful ride through Ft. Sill and the Wichita Mountains. You will be leaving the Museum of the Great Plains at 8:00 a.m. on Saturday and riding either 40, 50 or 60 miles through some of the most beautiful scenery in Oklahoma. We will also have a historic route by the Ft. Sill Museum and some of the most important historical properties at Ft. Sill. The longer rides will have a water stop at the Visitors Center in the refuge. You can pause here and learn about the make up of the refuge along with what types of animals it supports. Also the location of the hiking trails and fishing lakes. From the Visitors Center you may ride back by Mt. Scott through Medicine Park, or on a breathtaking downhill that will pass the Meers Restaurant and loop around Lake Lawtonka back to Lawton. This is a smell the roses ride. Take your time, look around and enjoy!

Synergy in Motion Bike Festival

While dad is on his bike ride, we will be having an all day event at the museum for mom and the kids. We will have age specific events for kids ages 5 through 12. Activities will be as follows: Individual time trials, Drop the Pebble, Best Decorated Bike, Trick Bike Competition, Mountain Bike Barrel Racing, Tandem Rides, Bike repairs for kids, Helmet Exchange (if your helmet is damaged we will replace as long as supplies last). There will be other events including a ride around the lake and Bike Rodeo by the LAPD.
We will also have a Bike Swap Meet, a Huffy Throw and Bike Vendors. At the same time inside the museum we will have a display of antique bicycles dating from the 1800’s. This is an event for those who love bicycles and hiking. An event with something for everyone!
